Program to seize weapons starts this week

The state government is launching a campaign beginning Friday, February 11, to reduce the number of illegal weapons circulating on the streets of the Guadalajara.

To be called Módulo Seguro, por una Ciudad Tranquila (Secure Module, for a Tranquil City), the operation will involve public security forces at all three levels of government, as well as the Mexican Army, Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro said Wednesday.

While the full details of the program are still unclear, it is thought that it will involve checks on vehicles, although the governor has stressed that security forces will not be using random “stop and search” methods, sometimes referred to as volantas.

“We will always follow the principles of human rights,” the governor said.

“Firearms, in the wrong hands, circulating in our city,  is a serious problem that triggers violence and we have to solve it,” Alfaro said.
