State and federal authorities say they have made further advances in the investigation into the assassination of former Jalisco Governor Aristoteles Sandoval, who was shot to death in a Puerto Vallarta bar in December 2019.
A shootout in Puerto Vallarta on Saturday, April 22, involving officers of the National Guard (GN) resulted in the death of Saúl Alejandro “N” (alias “El Chopa”), believed to be a senior figure in the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG). The incident occurred around 3 p.m. in the exclusive Marina zone of the coastal resort. In a press statement, a GN spokesperson said National Guard personnel had “suffered an armed attack from a private vehicle.”
After sustaining gunshot wounds, Saúl Alejandro “N” died later in a local hospital.
Ricardo Mejía Berdeja, the undersecretary of Federal Security, said that Saúl Alejandro “N” had been sitting at a table close to Sandoval in the District 5 bar around 11:30 p.m. on December 17, 2019, just prior to the shooting,
Mejía said that at around 12:30 a.m. on December 18, the “capo” left the bar and met in a nearby pharmacy with men who were later seen outside the bar after the shooting.
