Smog testing program continues without fines

The Jalisco state government has backtracked on its decision to begin issuing fines for motorists who have failed to get an emissions inspection for their vehicles in the statewide program now known as Programa de Verificación Vehicular Responsable or PVR.

After a January 1 deadline passed, July 1 was the next date that traffic cops were supposed to start handing out tickets to vehicles not displaying “verification holograms.”

That date has now been put on hold, says Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro, until the program is “fully operational.”

Despite the continued lack of fines, Alfaro said the program is still “obligatory” and car owners should abide by the calendar that determines when their vehicles should be taken to “verification centers” for testing.  June corresponds to vehicles with Jalisco plates ending in 5.

The revamped smog testing program for private vehicles started in August 2021. Foreign-plated vehicles are not included in the program.
