Jalisco avian flu outbreak forces huge poultry cull

Around 360,000 poultry birds have been culled in the Los Altos region of Jalisco after an avian flu outbreak at a farm near the town of San Miguel El Alto.   

no.1Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) Secretary Ana Lucía Camacho Sevilla said birds are being monitored at 12 neighboring farms but, as yet, no further cases have been detected.

The National Service for Health, Safety and Agri-Food Quality issued a quarantine order to farms in 21 Jalisco municipalities following the detection of the virus in San Miguel El Alto. These are Acatic, Arandas, Atotonilco El Alto, Cañadas de Obregón, Encarnación de Díaz, Jalostotitlán, Jesús María, Lagos de Moreno, Mexticacán, Ojuelos, San Julián, San Diego de Alejandría, San Ignacio Cerró Gordo, San Juan de los Lagos, Teocaltiche, Tepatitlán de Morelos, Unión de San Antonio, Villa Hidalgo, Valle de Guadalupe, Yahualica and, of course, San Miguel El Alto.
