Cabin luggage woes top consumer complaints in 2022

Airlines were a major target of consumers’ wrath in 2022, said the head of the Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) in Jalisco. Sebastián Hernández Méndez said most of the complaints in the tourism sector involved the non-compliance by airlines regarding aviation sector rules that determine cabin luggage up to 10 kilograms must be free of charge.

Hernández said the Jalisco office received 3,083 complaints during 2022, of which 547 corresponded to the tourism sector, surpassing telecommunications firms, which traditionally received the most complaints. Others high on the list included the automotive sector, credit companies, gas companies, real estate firms, manufacturers of electrical appliances and furniture stores. Common complaints were refusals to return deposits, terminate contracts, validate guarantees and correct errors, Hernández said. He added that 87 percent of the complaints were resolved successfully.

The Profeco office in Guadalajara is located at Morelos 1830, Colonia Lafayette. Open 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Telephone: 333-616-7667. There are also Profeco offices in Puerto Vallarta and Lagos de Moreno. Complaints can also be filed online or by email; see infoprofeco.com.mx/jalisco.
