Jalisco avocados heading to Super Bowl

For the first time next month, football fans in the United States will be chowing down bowls of guacamole prepared with avocados cultivated in Jalisco.

Around 500 containers of avocados are being sent north for sale during the Super Bowl weekend, according to the Association of Avocado Producers and Packers of Jalisco (Apeajal).

After years of dillydallying, in 2022 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) finally gave the green light for avocado imports from ten Jalisco municipalities. Up until then, Michoacan had been the only state permitted to export the popular fruit to the United States. Apeajal expects exports of avocados from Jalisco to the United States to reach close to 100,000 tons by July of this year. The U.S. market accounts for 84 percent of Mexico’s avocado exports.

The Super Bowl will be held on Sunday, February 12 at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. More avocados are sold during this weekend in the United States than at any other time of the year.
