Governor to step away from politics

Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro has ended the speculation concerning his future, announcing that he will not run for president, nor seek any other political post after he finishes his six-year term in 2024.

pg7aAlfaro said his decision to retire from the political scene (at least temporarily) was motivated by his disgust at the narrow-mindedness of the hierarchy of his party, the Movimiento Ciudadano (MC).

In a video message posted on social media, the governor said the opinions of the MC in Jalisco have been ignored at the national level, despite the massive contribution this state has made to the development of the party over the last decade.  “I don’t want to be part of something I don’t believe in,” he said.

Alfaro slammed the MC leadership for refusing to open a dialogue among members on whether to join the opposition coalition of the National Action Party (PAN), the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) to select a “unity candidate” to take the fight to the ruling Morena Party in next year’s presidential election (see story below).
