Jalisco climbers perish on Mexico’s tallest peak

Two mountaineers from Jalisco died and another is hospitalized in serious condition after they became caught in bad weather on the Pico de Orizaba, Mexico’s highest mountain, located in the state of Puebla.

pg7The three were part of a team of 12 climbers who set out from Guadalajara last Saturday to scale the peak.

The climbers reached the summit successfully on Sunday morning, according to Puebla Civil Protection, but a sudden change in weather conditions, with strong winds, caused the team to disperse.

The Grupo de Socorro Alpino de la CDMX (Mexico City Alpine Rescue Unit), together with experienced mountaineers from agencies in Puebla and Veracruz, participated in the search for the missing mountaineers. Eight were eventually located and all managed to make it down the mountain safely.
