Código Rojo: What the highest-level security alert means

As members of criminal organizations sowed chaos and fear throughout Jalisco on Sunday, Governor Pablo Lemus made a swift decision to enact a Código Rojo (Code Red) security alert. 

pg3bWhile many residents of the state had heard the name of this action, it turns out that few actually knew the specifics of what it meant beyond the understanding that something serious was unfolding.

Código Rojo is the highest-level security alert protocol in Jalisco, activated during situations of extreme violence that exceed the ordinary response capabilities of local police. When triggered, it mobilizes and coordinates all three levels of government — municipal, state, and federal forces, including the National Guard and Army — to work under unified command and rapidly respond to threats such as armed blockades, attacks and vandalism.
