Jalisco melts down weapons on International Day of Firearm Destruction

Mexican authorities destroyed 509 firearms, 1,213 magazines, and 43,866 cartridges at a public event held at the 15th Military Zone in La Mojonera, Zapopan on July 9. 

pg5The destruction, carried out by the Defense Ministry (SEDENA), marked the International Day of Firearm Destruction. The weapons had been seized by federal, state and municipal law enforcement agencies during various operations and were handed over to the military for final disposal.  The destruction campaign was part of the nationwide “Sí al Desarme, Sí a la Paz” (Yes to Disarmament, Yes to Peace) initiative. President Claudia Sheinbaum led a similar ceremony at the Basilica of Guadalupe, where she called on families to promote peace from their homes and urged the United States to curb the flow of illegal firearms across the border.  So far, voluntary and anonymous citizen turn-ins (buy backs) at SEDENA modules have yielded 11,679 firearms, over 700,000 cartridges, and nearly 2,000 grenades, according to official figures.
