Film fest honors Latino and Nordic cinema

The director of the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG) presented Spanish Director Pablo Berger with the Cine Latino Award for his film “Blancanieves” at the 24th Palm Springs International Film Festival in California last week.

The award recognizes Iberoamerican cinema and included a cash prize of 5,000 dollars donated by the FICG and the University of Guadalajara’s campus in Los Angeles (UDGLA).

The 28th annual FICG runs from March 1 to 9 this year. The movies on show will include several from northern European directors who have been touring the world’s major film festivals in the Nordic Lights program.

Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden will be the guests of honor at the FICG and there will be screenings of Norwegian film “Kon-Tiki,” Danish film “A Royal Affair” and Icelandic movie “The Deep.” The former two films received nominations for Best Foreign Language film at this year’s Academy Awards, while the latter was one of nine originally shortlisted but was not among the final five nominees.
