Folk dance

The acclaimed Ballet Folclórico de la Universidad de Guadalajara continues its summer season at the majestic Teatro Degollado – its spiritual home.

Take a journey from pre-Hispanic times, through various states, including Michoacan and Veracruz, to the epic and emotive Jalisco finale.

Popular Mexican folk singer performs his greatest hits in a concert marking 20 years since a landmark gig in the Parque Naucalli in Mexico City, which was later remastered into two albums.

Cabaret Tropicana

Colorful and animated spectacle from Cuba, based on the show offered at the famous Havana club over almost eight decades. The Club Tropicana was once known as the most sumptuous night club in the world and this show, featuring more than 60 dancers, singers and a glitzy montage, is a perfect reflection of this, many reviewers of the show say.

Mariachi Festival galas

A highlight of the annual International Mariachi Festival are the emotive galas featuring some of the most renowned bands of the genre, together with the Jalisco
Philharmonic Orchestra (OFJ). Tickets are not cheap, but the galas are crucial in helping fund the event.  The atmosphere at the galas is usually electric and a good time is guaranteed.

King Crimson

The 50th anniversary tour of famed English rock band, known primarily for their acclaimed debut album “In the Court of the Crimson King,” which fused elements of jazz, classical and experimental music. Original  band member Robert Fripp remains, along with Mel Collins, who joined the band in 1970, a year after its formation.

British folk/rock band formed in 2007 shot to fame on both sides of the Atlantic after the release of their award winning first album Sigh No More (2009) that included favorites such as “Winter Winds” and “Little Lion Man.” Three more top-selling albums followed – Babel (2012), Wilder Mind (2015) and Delta (2018) – plus a string of more prizes.  From their beginnings using bluegrass and folk instrumentation, with the core instruments of acoustic guitar, banjo, piano and a double bass, the band began to change its sound, swapping the banjo for electric guitar. This the band’s first tour of Mexico.

Jerome Jennings Quartet

The Jazz At Lincoln Center series continues with a performance by a quartet led by drummer Jerome Jennings who has played every major jazz club in New York City from The Village Vanguard, Birdland and The BlueNote, to Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola. Internationally he’s performed in over 45 countries. In the fall of 2017, Jennings accepted the position as resident director of The Juilliard Jazz Orchestra.

The Orquesta de Cámara Higinio Ruvacalaba of the Universidad de Guadalajara (UdG) – founded in 2007 – presents “Música del Continente Americano” (Music from the American Continent). Featuring piano soloist Alla Milchtein of Mexico, and Uruguayan violinist Nicolás Giordano.  This is a high-quality outfit, comprised of the cream of the crop of former and current UdG music students.
