Acclaimed Mexican Conductor Alondra de la Parra has brought together 30 of the best musicians in the world to create The Impossible Orchestra – a project to support women and children suffering abuse and hardship in Mexico.
The 30 performers from 14 nations include members of the Berlin Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic, as well as renowned soloists such as Cuban trumpeter and ten-time Grammy winner Arturo Sandoval, feted Serbian violinist Nemanja Radulović and U.S. cellist Alisa Weilerstein.
The orchestra’s first recording and video is Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2, which De la Parra says is emblematic of her native country and recognized around the world.
The video begins with De la Parra playing the opening sounds of the work seated at the piano. It also includes Mexican dancer Elisa Carrillo performing choreography by Christopher Wheeldon, while famed Mexican tenor Rolando Villazón – in a non-singing role – makes an unusual contribution.
