‘Jaliwood’ initiative takes root

As Mexico’s cost-cutting federal government slashes its endowments to cultural activities, including the film sector,  Jalisco is taking a very different approach.

pg7aState Governor Enrique Alfaro recently announced a new legislative initiative that seeks to make Jalisco the capital of filmmaking in Latin America.

While a major aim of the new state film law (Ley de Filmaciones) is to offer tax breaks and promote and encourage film and series production in Jalisco, especially Netflix and other streaming platforms, it is also designed to “develop cinematography and local talent … and boost the economy of Jalisco,” said Rodolfo Guzmán, head of the Comisión de Filmaciones del Estado de Jalisco (Jalisco Film Commission or COFIEJ)

Guzmán said the new law will be overseen by an advisory council comprised of local, national and international film industry notables, who will also be charged with offering advice on regulating the sector, establishing film archives and liaising with federal, state and municipal authorities, academic institutions and research institutions.
