Cabañas offers retrospective of Mexican art on the cusp

For a generation of artists probably at the apex of their careers between 1967 and 1977, Jalisco was a good place to be, if a current exhibition at Instituto Cultural Cabañas is any indication.

pg16bAmong the 25 artists, whose work was mostly plucked from private collections for “Abstracciones,” a sprinkling were foreign-born and invited here by the insightful leader of the University of Guadalajara’s department of fine arts during that decade. But most of the artists on display were homegrown, although some well known sculptors who did public work and are remembered on the oversize timeline in the third of the show’s five salons, were foreign.
