Cheery evening recitals set to invigorate historic center

The recent Mariachi Festival may have been a damp squib but the stirring sounds of Mexico’s much-loved musical genre are once again being heard in Guadalajara’s historic center.

Mariachi recitals, complimented by folk dancing, are set to brighten the Guadalajara Centro, with free, open-air performances planned on consecutive evenings over the coming weeks.

The program started Thursday, October 14, 6 p.m. with a presentation by the Mariachi Ciudad de Guadalajara, along with the Ballet Folklorico de Guadalajara, on the Paseo Alcalde, across from the Rotunda de Jaliscienses Ilustres.  The show is repeated Friday, October 15, 7 p.m. in the quaint plaza that is home to the San Francisco and Aranzazú churches, located between avenidas 16 de Septiembre and Ramon Corona. The Ballet Pizintli perform Saturday, October 16, 7 p.m. in front of the Santuario de Guadalupe on Avenida Alcalde, and the Mariachi Ciudad de Guadalajara return Sunday, October 17, 7 p.m. in the Jardin de la Reforma, also on Alcalde, facing the (currently closed) Museo de Periodismo, two blocks from the Cathedral

The presentations will be repeated at the same times Thursday, October 21 to Sunday, October 24, and also Thursday, October 28 to Saturday, October 30.

The Guadalajara City Hall Culture Department hopes the presentations will become a regular attraction, drawing more visitors to the Centro Historico in the evening hours.
