Orozco show spotlights a tragic, heroic figure

If you are seeking insight into legendary Jalisco-born muralist Jose Clemente Orozco, an exhibit at Guadalajara’s Museo de Las Artes, which houses his second most renowned fresco, packs a didactic punch for anyone who grabs the golden ring.

pg24“Orozco Metafísico,” showing until May 29, celebrates 100 years since the start of the Mexican muralist movement with a collection of Orozco’s sketches, along with curatorial commentary related to his 18 fresco projects in North America, and a dramatic, remastered musical animation.

But the real opportunity in the show is learning the significance of this creator of the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas” (as his immense, soaring Cabañas masterwork is known), who has been incongruously called “Mexico’s not-so-favorite son.”
