Butoh

U Qux Cah is a performance by Butoh artist Sandra Soto. 

Once regarded as one of Japan’s more bizarre artistic endeavors, Butoh began in post-war Japan as an avant-garde dance form that ran counter to the prevailing performance arts winds. It has since spread its tendrils across the globe and is now performed and adored worldwide.

Live from the Met

The Metropolitan Opera presents the premiere of “Dead Man Walking,” composer Jake Heggie’s haunting new production based on Sister Helen Prejean’s memoir about her fight for the soul of a condemned murderer. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes the podium, with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato starring as Sister Helen.

Chamber Orchestra

In another of its regular monthly recitals, the Orquesta de Cámara Higinio Ruvalcaba presents a posthumous homage to Mexican composers Mario Lavista and Javier Álvarez, plus works by Japan’s Tōru Takemitsu and Arvo Pärt of Estonia.

Prayer for Peace

After two previous editions held in the Zapopan Basilica, the Conjunto presents Una oración por la paz (A prayer for peace), a tribute concert dedicated to the memory of the victims of violence in Mexico.  Under the artistic direction of Pilar Gómez-Ibarra, plus an organ accompaniment, a large choir comprsied of prominent local singers will perform the Requiem Op. 9 by French composer Maurice Duruflé, and the Lamentations of Jeremías by Thomas Tallis.

Orquesta Filarmónica de Jalisco

The state orchestra opens the final season of 2023.  Works by Blas Galindo, Mahler and Bruckner, will be conducted by OFJ maestro José Luis Castillo.  U.S. mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford is the invited soloist.

Odissi

A performance by Bijayini Satpathy, a renowned Indian classical dancer and Odissi scholar. Odissi is traditionally a dance-drama genre of performance art, where the artist(s) and musicians play out a story, a spiritual message or devotional poem from the Hindu texts, using symbolic costumes, body movement, abhinaya (expressions) and mudras (gestures and sign language) set out in ancient Sanskrit literature.

Orquesta Filarmónica de Jalisco

Guadalajara-born mezzo-soprano and orchestra director Grace Echauri is the guest conductor for the OFJ’s second program of the season, featuring Dmitri Shostakovich’s Obertura Festival and Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite. Note that this program has two consecutive Sunday shows.

Bass player Christian McBride, the winner of eight Grammys, a quartet in the latest gig featuring the best of New York’s jazz scene. The band has Nasheet Waits on drums, Josh Evans on trumpet, and Marcus Strickland on sax.

José Luis Castillo conducts.

Bugs Bunny & friends

Bugs Bunny at the Symphony is a major U.S. spectacle celebrating 100 years of Warner Brothers magic—and it’s not just kids who will love it!  Maestro George Daugherty conducts the Orquesta Solistas de América in a program featuring Looney Tunes cartoons with Bugs, Road Runner, Pepe LePew, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, and friends. For 30 years, Daugherty has performed this feat of conducting magic in front of more than 2.5 million people around the globe in thousands of concerts at venues from the Hollywood Bowl to New York’s Philharmonic Hall, from Sydney’s Opera House to a concert hall near the Kremlin.

The Fab Four

“The Beatles Symphonic Fantasy” features a full orchestra, accompanied by a Beatles tribute band approved by The Cavern Club in Liverpool. A project of Argentine musician and conductor Damián Mahler, the concert features many of the best-loved songs from the world’s most famous pop group.
