Grand exhibit highlights Jalisco painters through the ages

A large exhibit of paintings in Jalisco from the last 200 years, “Tierra Pródiga” (perhaps best translated as Lavish Land), is showing in Guadalajara’s lovely Ex Convento del Carmen through the end of the year.

pg6aThe earliest dated painting in the impressive show, which consists of 160 pieces, is from 1828 and its most recent work is from the present year.

Probably few of us have considered Jalisco’s role in the context of Mexican art. But after all, Guadalajara is a cultural capital second only to Mexico City. And state authorities don’t want us to forget that, as Jalisco celebrates 200 years since its founding.

The exhibition was curated by Dr. Arturo Camacho, a state history specialist in the Colegio de Jalisco. Among the show’s outstanding qualities are that it is not only inclusive and large (including many women, and filling both the Ex Convento’s floors), but gives us a look at breathtaking gems from private collections rarely or never shown in public.
