Summer fun awaits budding artists

Lakeside children will have a unique opportunity to get a head start toward following this area’s ancient traditions of making art during the week-long Third Annual LCS Children’s Art Program Summer Art Camp later this month.

Youngsters of all ages are invited to attend daily 10 a.m. to noon sessions at the Lake Chapala Society campus from Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 24. Some of the children’s innovative and surprisingly astute works will be sold in the annual sale that completes the program. The artwork will be displayed and sold in the LCS Gazebo on Saturday, July 25, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The funds from this sale will be divided between the young artists and the coffers which furnish supplies for the ongoing, year-round Saturday morning LCS Children’s Art Program.

The generous financial support of the Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) and the dedication of its members goes a long way to making this yearly event a major success. Many ASA volunteer will be on hand as the Art Camp provides a creative outlet and fun for the kids at the mid-point of summer vacation.

The Art Camp committee is planning special children’s workshops including painting with acrylics, collage making, jewelery crafting, Plein aire painting in oil, crafting with the long brown pods of tabachin trees, and painting in watercolor. Class sizes are limited, and children must register to take part in some of the events. Legacy artists, including Javier Zaragoza, Jesus Lopez Vega and Antonio Cardenas, will be instructing classes along with other ASA members and community volunteers.

A new workshop this year for children ages five and under will help them complete a series of delightful daily projects. Please note that children in this age group must be accompanied by an adult.

More volunteers are needed for the program.
