The ubiquitous Mexican rebozo has been a national symbol throughout this country’s proud history.
Even the renowned Jalisco painter Dr. Atl once declared that “the rebozo should be our national flag.”
Stephanie Schneiderman gives a talk on the historic and present-day expressions of Mexico’s iconic female garment Wednesday, June 26, 4 to 6 p.m. at Casa Libertad restaurant (next to Century 21) in San Antonio Tlayacapan.
She will review the present-day rebozo weaving centers of Mexico and discuss the special technique known as ikat – in Mexico known as jaspe – a highly specialized dye technique that gives the rebozo its distinctive speckled look.
Schneiderman will bring rebozos for the audience’s perusal, and will review an upcoming travel opportunity to visit one of the rebozo centers of Mexico during its annual festival.
Schneiderman has lived and traveled throughout Mexico for more than 40 years. She has scoured the towns, communities and villages learning about Mexico’s rich and diverse ethnographic landscape and in particular its expressions through textiles and dress.
