Just as the spirits of the dead and gone are expected to return home in coming days, traditional activities associated with the commemoration of Día de los Muertos that were suspended last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic will arise again in the Lake Chapala region.
State health authorities have partially lifted last year’s tight restrictions on customary family visits to local cemeteries. Under current measures, graveyards are allowed to operate at 70 percent capacity from October 25 to November 6, with groups of no more than ten persons – properly fitted in face masks – admitted entry. Live music and food and alcohol consumption at grave sites are prohibited.
A variety of free public events tied into Mexico’s distinctive remembrance of lost souls are back on the lakeside calendar, also in line with health protocols. The Chapala Culture Department has announced the following program: Sunday, October 31, 8 p.m., Ballet Folcklórico del Ayuntamiento performance at the Atotonilquillo plaza.
