Visiting author of LLT play shares playwriting wisdom

Lakeside Little Theatre has been lucky to have the playwright of this season’s final play, “Cake Walk,” come to our area for a visit.

pg13Colleen Curran is a  widely-popular Montreal playwright, novelist, actor and teacher.  She’s bright, high-spirited and impressively well-versed in her chosen field.

We recently had the opportunity to interview Curran about her background and “Cake Walk,” a farce about women’s comical mischief during a cake baking contest.

Here’s a snippet of how that interview played out.

Colleen, did you start out as a writer of comedy or like so many, did you start out writing in another capacity?

No. I dabbled in early jobs writing commercial copy, but not long after I started thinking of myself as a playwright. I had been writing plays from about age 14. I loved the entire experience. And when I went into university, I continued to write and also began putting on my plays myself, as well as submitting them to drama festivals.

In “Cake Walk,” are the characters and events based on your own experiences?

Oh yes. Started with all the things I love ... my mother, friends, baking, contests and how competitive they can be. It all fell together for me. I sent a first draft to a theater impresario I knew in Toronto. And she loved and produced it.
