Democrats Abroad Film Festival: last 3 films

Make your plans now to attend the Democrats Abroad Film Festival´s Last 3 Movies. The festival will wrap up in April with these “movies that matter:”

• “Don’t Look Up” (screening Sunday, April 10, 138 min.) is a 2021 American apocalyptic black comedy starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep. It tells the story of two astronomers attempting to warn humanity about an approaching comet that will destroy civilization. An allegory for climate change, the film is a satire of government, political, and media indifference to the climate crisis.

• “The Apollo: How the Legendary Theater Became America’s Most Important Venue” (showing Sunday, April 17, 102 min.) is a 2019 documentary. It’s an excellent recap of how The Apollo forged some of the country’s greatest artists, including Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, and the Jackson 5. Beginning a little over 80 years ago, it’s the longest running talent show in the world.

• “Merchants of Doubt” (showing Sunday, April 24, 96 min.) is a 2014 American documentary film about pundits-for-hire who present themselves as scientific authorities. However, they use proven techniques to spread doubt and confusion about many of the biggest public issues of our time, including cigarettes, toxic chemicals—and of course, climate change. Highly relevant in these times of Trumpian disinformation.

Each movie screens at 1:30 pm at Cinemagic in Plaza Bugambilias in Ajijic. Tickets: 150 pesos.  Mask and proof of vaccination required.
