Zombies dance to help Chapala’s needy

“Thrill The World” is an annual worldwide simultaneous dance of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

pg20aThis year, Ajijic celebrates its 12th anniversary event, where zombies young and old, Mexican and expats, learn the dance and raise money for local charities.

Elliott Joaquim started this event 12 years ago with just a few participants. Each year, it has grown in numbers of zombies and also in the amounts raised. Last year, more than 30,000 pesos were raised for the Cruz Roja, despite a mask requirement in force because of the pandemic.

Rehearsals to learn the choreography are currently taking place each Saturday, 1 to 3 p.m. or Wednesday, 5 to 7 p.m. All ages, from 4 to 75+, are welcome to learn how to do the “Thriller” dance steps.

This year, starting at 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 29, organizers hope to have at least 100 local zombies dancing on the Ajijic Malecón. There will be entertainment both before and after the dance. An official video will be uploaded to YouTube as soon as possible after the event.
