Mexican artisans were making memories, meeting new friends and sharing their handiworks with art patrons at the Feria Maestros del Arte.
Some of us return to the Feria year after year to seek out the vendors that we know and love. When you turn a corner and recognize the work of an artist that you admire or collect, you can’t help but get excited to see them. Maybe you want to add to your collection, or purchase a gift for a friend. Either way, it is so satisfying to greet the artists, welcome them back to our community and know that through your purchase you are sending them home with the means to continue their craft.
For some of the artisans it was their first time visiting us in Chapala and they were thrilled to be a part of the festivities. I am hoping you stumbled across Esteban Silva’s work. He was situated under a shady tree and his work immediately caught my attention. He hails from Pátzcuaro and fabricates paper from natural items and then uses it as a substrate for his paintings. He brought samples of paper made from corn and agave, but what I found the most interesting was the paper made from lirio. Lirio (water hyacinth) is the bothersome green plant that invades and thrives on the surface of Lake Pátzcuaro—and unfortunately we witness its presence on Lake Chapala.
