Multi-talented quintet to play at auditorium

The Hi-Stakes, a quintet based in Amsterdam, preforms Tuesday, February 6, 6 p.m. at the Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera (CCAR).

The band will get the audience jumping, dancing and shouting to Louis Jordan inspired rhythm and blues, dreaming to the sweet sound of blues ballads inherited from Percy Mayfield, and swaying their hips to the boogaloos of Blue Note Records from the late 1950s.

Original melodies, with lyrics full of irony and passion, are authentically performed across a wide range of popular genres of the time, whether it’s a lyrical blues ballads an explosive old-school rhythm ’n blues number. Their repertoire covers anything between the worlds of jazz and blues. The Hi-Stakes consists of Sam Ghezzi on vocals and tenor saxophone, Frank Groenendijk on tenor saxophone, Linus Eppinger on guitar, César Puente on double bass, and Joe Korach on drums. The unique combination of two tenor saxophones as the woodwind section showcases its own timbre and sound in a unique and distinctive way.
