Movies That Matter Film Festival returns to Ajijic March 3

The Lake Chapala Chapter of Democrats Abroad 11th annual Film Festival starts Sunday, March 3 at the Cine+Lago Theater in Plaza Bugambilias in Ajijic. Ten films in the series will run at 2 p.m. every Sunday and Thursday during March.

The first, “The Soul of America” (Sunday, March 3), encapsulates the 2024 theme: “Democracy vs. Dictatorship” with its chilling examination of parallels in American history and today. Its aim is to propose how we can better unite learning from the past.

The second film, “Navalny” (Thursday, March 7), was selected in 2023 to honor the bravery of Putin’s most outspoken opposition leader while serving in jail. Now, following his tragic death, this 2023 Oscar-winner remembers Alexei Navalny, who survived poisoning in 2020 yet continued to fight from prison.

“Rustin” (Sunday, March 10) is a gripping dramatization of activist Bayard Rustin, who faced racism and homophobia while helping to change the course of Civil Rights history by orchestrating the 1963 momentous March on Washington. He challenged authority and never apologized for what he believed. Starring Oscar-nominee Colman Domingo.
