LLT restages powerful, popular play

Friday to Sunday, January 10 to 12, Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) will reprise its acclaimed production of the award-winning play, “Facing East,” which it first staged last June to sold-out audiences.

pg15b“Truly, we were astounded by the audience response during the show’s initial run,” explained LLT President Collette Cavadetscher, the play’s director.  “Then, later, by the snowbirds who told us how much they’d wished they’d seen it. And, of course, there’s the script’s incredibly powerful story and message. Our board unanimously decided to produce the play again between two of our main-stage productions.”

“Facing East” depicts the tortured conversation of a Mormon husband and wife over the grave of their gay son, in which they finally confront the truth about his suicide, their marriage and even their faith. Despite confronting head-on the Mormon condemnation of homosexuality, the play won multiple awards in Salt Lake City when it premiered in 2006, including Best Drama by both the Mormon-owned Deseret Morning News and the Association for Mormon Letters. The play portrays every character with immense compassion, and ultimately shows all of them finding their bittersweet redemption.
