Jewish Film Festival: Chaos at the Shabbat table in ‘Bad Shabbos’

The 2026 Ajijic Jewish Film Festival continues at the Cinema +Lago Plaza Bugambilias in Ajijic on Sunday, January 18, at 1:30 p.m. with a comedy film, “Bad Shabbos.”

It’s the ultimate Shabbat dinner-gone-wrong.

As an interfaith couple prepares for their parents to meet for the very first time over a Shabbat dinner on New York’s Upper West Side, an accidental death throws a wrench into the plans. But wait, the death may not be an accident after all, but a murder.

With Catholic parents due any moment, this family dinner quickly spirals into disaster. A body must be hidden and the crisis of all crises (at least in the minds of the protagonists) must be averted at all costs.

Though filled with Jewish clichés (some pure gold, some cringeworthy), Bad Shabbos is, nonetheless, a roaring good time for all.

It’s a night gone terribly wrong for a young New York couple, completely at a loss for what to do.

There’s an anxious husband to be, a restless matriarch and a nutty neighbor who collectively set the stage for anything but a casual, family Shabbat gathering.

Throw in stereotypes, a hidden body and a ridiculous cover-up, and you’ve got Bad Shabbos in a nutshell.

Festival attendees will enjoy this light and fast-paced comedy that occurs during one memorable evening in New York, as the cast scrambles to address the crisis, while learning life lessons along the way.

Following the showing of “Bad Shabbos,” viewers are invited to remain for Rosalie’s Talk-Back discussion of the film,

Directed by Daniel Roberts, USA, 2024, runtime 1 hr 24 mins.
