Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) will, for the first time, host a Spanish-language opera, “El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego,” Sunday, June 14 and Monday, June 15.
The stunning, unique opera paints, in the words of the producers, “a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth, the story depicts Frida, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell.”

Filmed live at New York’s acclaimed Metropolitan Opera, “El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego” will be projected with English subtitles in LLT’s main McIntosh auditorium, with its state-of-the-art screen, projection and sound systems both days at 4 p.m. Tickets, 350 pesos, are available at lakesidelittletheatre.com and before the shows at the box office.
