Hymn festival

A hymn festival to be directed by distinguished choir conductor Thomas Pavlechko will be held on Sunday, February 5, 4 p.m. at Saint Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar. Pavlechko, who is a widely published composer of choral anthems, liturgical music, Psalm settings and more than 100 hymn tunes, will direct the Saint Andrew’s choir.

The event, entitled “The Life of Christ” will be a participative concert with a liturgical theme. Hymns, anthems, organ and piano improvisations and readings will be used. The choir and the congregation will sing and all will enjoy the quartet of a clarinet, saxophone, bass and percussion. The detailed program will keep the audience informed as to their participation. The whole thing is designed to be spiritually uplifting and just plain fun. The cash bar opens at 3 p.m. Tickets are 200 pesos each. Contact Bernice Perris at 766-4270.

Guitars

Two of Jalisco’s best classical guitarists, Winfried Kellner and his guest artist David Mosqueda will grace the stage of Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago on Friday, January 27, 7:30 p.m. They have both enjoyed acclaimed international careers that have taken them to Germany, Canada, England, the United States.

The program will include works by Bach, Luys Milan, Fernando Sor, J.K. Mertz, Joaquin Rodrigo and more.

Tickets are 150 pesos and now on sale at SuperLake Market, Charter Club Tours in Plaza Montana and the Auditorium.

Pianos

A series of piano recitals of students from the University of Guadalajara’s Department of Music is in progress at Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (old train station) in Chapala. Coming up on the roster are Dolores Aguilar Vaca on January 27, Efrain Ulloa on February 3, Carlos Javier Velez Urzua on February 10, Mariana Orozco Gonzalez on February 17, Everardo Rojas on February 24 and Catalina Gil on March 2. Each recital begins at 7 p.m. and admission is free. The proportions of the building’s central hall make for clear and bright acoustics for these presentations.

Crafty

Look for a craft show featuring jewelry, Mary Kay cosmetics, silk flowers, wine glass coasters and greeting cards from January 24 to January 28 at the Early Bird Café. The restaurant is located at Ocampo 30 in Ajijic.

Photos

Jill Flyer and Luis Mancera McCormick of Galeria Quattro are again teaching their popular classes of photography and Photoshop. Join them and find out everything you need to know to take quality photos and learn how to use your own camera to its fullest advantage for well balanced and creative compositions. The Photoshop class will let you take that creativity to new levels.

Each course lasts five weeks and costs 600 pesos. Those who take both courses will get a reduced rate of 1,000 pesos for the two.

Classes are held on Friday afternoons at the Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center in Chapala. The Photography class is form 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and the Photoshop class is from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both classes start Friday, February 3 and continue for five weeks (February 3, 10, 17, 24 and March 2). Private classes are also available.

Peace in Ajijic

Being billed as an effort to promote peace in the Lakeside area, Restaurant La Tasca will present a musical “Festival por la Paz” (Peace Festival) from February 2 to February 11. The wide selection of music will come from the best groups in Mexico.

Thursday, February 2, will be “Smoke Rings Quarter” with swing and manouche starting at 7 p.m. Friday, February 3, “Radaid” performes world music fusion at 8 p.m. Saturday, February 4 enjoy “Mindhala” with down tempo at 8 p.m. Thursday, February 9, it’s “Sherele” with Klezmer music at 7 p.m. Friday, February 10 “Los Andersongs” will play folk music at 8 p.m. and on Saturday, February 11 the “San Juan Project’ will present funk and jazz at 8 p.m.

The cover charge for these performances is 50 pesos with the exception of “Radaid,” which costs 100 pesos. Give peace a chance.

Really big show

A collection of local artists and artisans from Ajijic will come together for an exhibition and sale of their work on Saturday and Sunday, January 28 and 29, 9 am. to 4 p.m. in the garden at Calle Parroquia 9 in Ajijic. The garden has access from the “art alley” connecting the Ajijic Plaza with Marcos Castellanos and from the street running straight from San Andres church, forming the south boundary of the Ajijic Plaza. Among those scheduled to be there are Antonio Cardenas, Javier Zaragoza, Jesus Lopez Vega, Antonio Lopez Vega, Daniel Palma and a score of others. Don’t miss!
