Music festival

A special treat will be the composer’s talk to the audience at 7 p.m. before the concert. The doors will be closed for the talk and reopened 20 minutes later for the concert. All of this will take place on Wednesday, February 22 at Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago.

Another special festival guest, world-renowned pianist Anton Kuerti, will perform twice during the festival: the first time on Thursday, February 23 in an all-Beethoven concert and in the Mozart concerto at the Closing Gala on Thursday, March 1.

The mural

Everyone is invited to the celebration and dedication of the Lake Chapala Society Children’s Art Program mural on Saturday, March 3, noon.

There will be mariachi music and refreshments, and many former students of the program that the mural honors will be on hand.

The mural was painted by Jesus Lopez Vega and Javier Zaragoza, both well-known artists and students of the Neill James Children’s Art Program, which began in 1956. Since then, it has engaged thousands of Mexican children in the exploration of their creative talents.

The mural honors three women who enriched the lives of so many young Mexicans. Neill James was a writer and philanthropist from the United States whose interest and generosity allowed many students to develop their fine arts skills. Angelita Aldana Padilla taught reading and art in the public library started by James. Mildred Boyd, a 25-year resident of Lakeside, rejuvenated the Children’s Art Program under the auspices of the Lake Chapala Society in 1990 and continued to lead and expand the program until 2010.

The mural was made possible through a generous donation from the Ajijic Society of the Arts and the creative collaboration and time of Lopez Vega and Zaragoza.
