ASA

The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) will exhibit their collective creations on Ajijic’s principal plaza on Sunday, April 22, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The organization of local artists will present paintings in varied media, jewelry, fabric art, photography and more. It’s definitely worth a stop. Those interested in joining ASA can find them on the first Monday of the month (the next one is May 7) 10 a.m. at La Bodega Restaurant, Calle 16 de Septiembre 124 in Ajijic. Get there early. The coffee’s ready at 9:30 a.m.

Watercolor

Watercolor master Emilio Galindo is holding painting workshops every Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Efren Gonzalez Gallery, Marcos Castellanos 7 in Ajijic. The classes cost 400 pesos each and artists bring their own supplies. Supplies are also available for sale at reasonable prices at the Gallery. Minimalist theater

The next production by the Naked Stage Theater will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 20, 21 and 22, at Rio Bravo 10 on the west end of Ajijic. Curtain is at 4 p.m. The readers’ theater is presenting Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical play, “The Brighton Beach Memoirs” (set in Brooklyn, New York, not to be confused with the British locale) by Neil Simon. The play shares the joys and difficulties of a middle class Jewish family in the 1930s shortly after the Great Depression and before WWII. Phyllis Silverman is directing a talented cast of Kevin O’Byrne, Don Chaloner, Alex Maidan, Shirley Appelbaum, Anne Drake, Liz White and Helena Feldstein. Directing

Lakeside Little Theatre will present a director’s summer workshop beginning on May 25. Leading the project will be Dave McIntosh, director of last season’s smash hit, “How the Other Half Loves.” Both aspiring and experienced directors are invited to attend. This will be a ‘hands on’ exercise in the art and craft of stage directing taught by a director with more than 50 years experience.

The workshop will stage scenes from classic theater culminating in four performances before a live audience from June 27 to June 30. New and renewal memberships will be available at registration for 100 pesos.

Song

Baritone John Herbert Jones and pianist Timothy G. Ruff Welch will present a “Concert of Song” on Sunday, April 22, 4 p.m. (cash bar opens at 3 p.m.) at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar. The concert is to raise funds to aid young Mexican members of Los Cantantes del Lago participate in a choral music competition to be held in British Columbia this summer. It will feature songs by Ralph Vaughn Williams and Dvorak, along with several old-time church ‘barn burners’ and energetic Broadway tunes. Tickets are 175 pesos and can be purchased at Diane Pearl Colecciones in Ajijic.

Another fund-raising event coming up to help the Mexican choristers of Los Cantantes del Lago participate in the summer tour to British Columbia will be “Object of Desire, a Musical Odyssey” set for May 20, 4 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar. It will feature baritone Eduardo Munoz Zuniga and pianist Tim Welch. Tickets are 180 pesos and are on sale at Diane Pearl Colecciones and Mia’s Boutique. Dance

Get ready to rock and roll on Thursday, April 26 at the American Bandstand Dance Party beginning at 7:30 p.m. at La Bodega Restaurant, Calle 16 de Septiembre 124 in Ajijic. Jack and Jerry will be on hand to lead the festivities. Call 766-1002 for reservations.

Choirs

Two concerts in the April 21-28 Jalisco Canta (Jalisco Sings) choral festival have been scheduled at the Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center (old train station) in Chapala.

Camerata Vocal Sine Nomine, a lively and accomplished singing group from Cuba, will perform on Tuesday, April 24, 8 p.m., while Camerata Coral, a 16-member choir from Puerto Rico, will bring their rich musical heritage and talent to the area  on Thursday, April 26, 8 p.m.

The public is invited to both these events and there is no admission fee.
