Easter Camp concerts

The Orquesta Axixic (OA) will wrap up its third annual Easter Music Camp with two live performances scheduled for this weekend.

Throughout the past week members of the local orchestra and around 30 young musicians from other parts of Jalisco have engaged in an intensive series of workshop sessions to refine their instrumental skills.

Participants will put their exercises into practice for the public with a recital of eight classical and modern compositions set for Friday, April 25, 8 p.m. at Jocotepec’s Casa de la Culture. Admission is free of charge.

For the grand finale, the music campers will perform a full concert repertoire on Saturday, April 26, 7 p.m., at Club Exótica, located inside the Jardin restaurant at the Ajijic plaza. The children’s chorus of the Orquesta Filarmonica Infantil de La Ribera de Chapala will also make an appearance during the program. The entry fee is priced at 100 pesos per person, with a two-for-one deal offered to children and students.

Malecon stage

While the Chapala government’s ambitious plan to renovate the eastern segment of the waterfront Malecón has been moving forward at a snail’s pace, workmen are now hurriedly finishing the outdoor events forum that will be its centerpiece. The new performance stage will be inaugurated on Friday, May 2 with a free show celebrating International Dance Day.

Pre-hispanic feast

Exotic dishes highlighting the flavors of Mexico’s ancient past will be featured in the nine-course feast prepared for 250 diners attending La Gran Noche del Chef, set for Monday, April 28 on the grounds of Chapala’s Centro Cultural González Gallo.

Working under the title Banquetes de Moctezuma, chef Gerardo Montoya Guerrero has designed a menu of signature platters, each putting a sophisticated spin on basic cooking ingredients employed in the pre-Hispanic kitchen: corn, beans, cacti, wild greens, different types of chiles and endemic protein sources such as crab, lobster, rabbit and quail. Each course will be complemented by a selected wine or designer beverage. The complete menu is posted at http://www.lagrannochedelchef.com/

The gate opens at 5:45 p.m., giving guests two hours prior to the 8:30 p.m. dinner service to socialize, sip welcome cocktails, wander through a commercial exhibition area and take in a cultural program that will include art, poetry, music and an ancestral ritual performed by the Xalistli dance troupe.

Although the evening of culinary artistry is primarily geared for chefs, restaurateurs and other professionals involved in the hospitality industry, the event is also open to all foodies yearning for a unique dining experience. The all-inclusive price of admission is 1,500 pesos per person. Last-minute reservations may be booked by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. Dance show under the stars

The Chapala Municipal government will host a special program on Friday, May 2, 8 p.m., in a dual celebration of International Dance Day and the official inauguration of the new outdoor public events forum located on the eastern leg of the city’s waterfront Malecón. With the registration for dance troupes of all genres remaining open until the middle of next week, the program line-up has yet to be announced. The under-the-stars show will be open to the public free of charge.
