Film Aficionados
Lake Chapala Society members can take advantage of Film Aficionados screenings each Thursday at 2 p.m. On June 7, “The Insult” (“L’Insulte”) 2017, Lebanon, will be shown.
After an emotional exchange between a Lebanese Christian and a Palestinian refugee escalates, the men end up in a courtroom involved in a case that gets national attention. Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film. (109 minutes).
Centro Cultural Ajijic
A collective exhibition of ten artists, El Taller de Theo (Theo’s Workshop), showcases the output of the students of maestra Elfi Kass. The opening is Saturday, June 9, 5 p.m., upstairs at the Centro Cultural Ajijic. Downstairs, the eclectic work of Ornela Moon opens at the same time.
Classical concerts
Three concerts are planned during the remander of June at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala. A free piano recital by Daniel Lomeli, sponsored by the Universidad de Guadalajara, will be June 14, 7 p.m.; A concert by two guitars and flute featuring DAvid Mozqueda, Nury Ulate and Viny will be Friday, June 22, 7 p.m., admission is 100 pesos. Another free UdeG sponsored piano concert by Susana Bueno will be held June 28, 7 p.m.
LCS Music Fest
The Lake Chapala Society will hold another of its popular Music Fests, Saturday, July 14, 2:30-7 p.m., featuring the one and only Woodstock Band and other musical acts. Summer food fare: hotdogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob and cakes will be available. A cash bar will operate. Tickets, 150 pesos for members and 180 pesos for nonmembers, are on sale at LCS and Diane Pearl. Tickets at the gate on the day of the event are 200 pesos. Food and drink are not included in the entry price.
LLT summer fundraiser
Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) will present “Spalding Gray – Terrors of Pleasure,” Saturday, June 16, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 17, 4 p.m.
Spalding Gray was a U.S. actor and writer, best known for the autobiographical monologues that he wrote and performed for the theater in the 1980s and 1990s. Gray’s monologues are an American treasure, giving voice to our unspoken fears and ambitions. When Gray first bought his little house in the Catskill Mountains he had no idea what terrors lay ahead of him. The only thing that saved the situation from becoming a total disaster was being able to tell a story about it, and this is that story, the story of “the little house that cried.”
Directed by Peggy Lord Chilton, the sole cast member is Ed Tasca, a novelist, playwright and member of the Dramatist’s Guild. He has been published in the United States, Canada, England, Italy, Australia and Mexico. He currently has two full-length plays published, one in the United States and one in England.
Since arriving in Mexico, Tasca has appeared in several LLT productions, including his own play, “Mark Twain, UnCensored” in 2016.
Jam B Fest
Local promotors in the arts and music scene are holding a massive cultural jam in the gardens of the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala Saturday, June 16, from noon to 11 p.m. With the idea to promote the center and local talent, and motivate students of the arts and music, Jam B Fest will offer an all-day visual and audible experience. Artists are invited to bring their work to show and meet other artists. Musicians of all stripes can come and jam with their fellows. The art will be displayed until 7 p.m. under a large tent structure in case of inclement weather. Artists who wish to show their work are asked to donate a piece to sell in order to help fund the event.
Invited artists include photographer Andrea Baez Jimenez, the Sweet Cotton Collective doll makers, graphic artist Ana Paula Camacho “Kikimoon” and artists Adriana Danela Alvarez Ceceñas and Nataly Perez Santana. Also on tap will be art workshops for children. Twenty plants will be donated to the Centro Cultural to spiff up its garden area. Vegetarian hamburgers, agua fresca, beer and wine will also be sold.

Guanajuato musicians Tango Insurgents present a concert Saturday, June 16, 6 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Ajijic. Tickets are 100 pesos in advance and 120 pesos at the door.
Viva summer concerts
Viva la Musica begins its Summer Concert Series, “Romance in the Village,” with Slovakian violinist Robert Markus and Sinaloan pianist Rosa Maria Valdez presenting romantic rhapsodies by Slovakian and Spanish composers. The concert is Thursday, June 21, with a champagne reception at 3:30 p.m. and the concert at 4 p.m. held in a private home in Upper Ajijic. The address and map are included on the ticket, 500 pesos, available at Diane Pearl, Mia’s Boutique and the LCS ticket booth, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon.
Contemporary Dance
The Ballet Ixtlacapaotl performs the spectacle “Loteria que Canta, Baila y Llora” on Friday, June 29, 7 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Ajijic. Entrance is free.
Bravo! Theatre
“Visiting Mr. Green” is a funny, emotional and compelling story about what tears us apart and what brings us back together.
This production at Bravo Theatre is directed by Jayme Littlejohn and stars Roger Larson, last seen in “Trying” at Bravo, and Ken Yakiwchuk, last seen in “Quality of Life” at Naked Stage. They have brought this show to life twice before and this time the performance is in loving memory of Roger’s partner Phil Shepherd, as a benefit to help defray medical expenses.
The show got a rave review comparing it to an off-Broadway production and audiences have clamored for a reprise run.
Show dates are July 7, 8, 14 and 15. LCS Summer Art Camp
Now is time to get your favorite young person to sign up for the 6th Annual Art Camp, sponsored by the Lake Chapala Society’s Children’s Art program.
The camp will run from Monday, July 30 to Friday, August 3, 10 a.m. to noon daily. Registration has already begun and runs through July 28.
This year, the workshops consist of activities with acrylics, watercolor, clay modeling, kite-making and mosaics, drawing, daily projects for the little ones. The kids are offered a small snack at the end of each day.
