Bare Stage Theatre
“Old Wives’ Tales” by Kevin Riordan is the next production by Bare Stage Theatre, with curtain dates Friday to Sunday, August 30, August 31 and September 1. All shows are at 4 p.m.
The play is a no-holds barred comic examination of a mother-daughter relationship – complete with squabbles, sarcasm and unsolicited motherly advice. Three funny vignettes each highlighting a different stage in their lives – from the night before the daughter’s wedding, to the mother’s birthday luncheon years later and finally rewriting the mother’s will after her husband passes away.

Cellist Yalissa Cruz Espino and pianist Rosa Maria Valdez present “XalCul Mexicano,” an emotive concert featuring well-known works by Mexican composers at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala, Friday, August 30, 7 p.m. Cost: 200 pesos.
Flamenco
Lucero Cardenas joins with singer Santiago Maesterra, guitarist Fernando Martinez and percussionist Emilia Galvez for a night of flamenco, Saturday, August 31, 8 p.m. at La Cochera Cultural, Javier Mina 49 in Ajijic. Tickets, 200 pesos, include your first beverage.
Pop-up art show
Artists Shannon Kilkenny, Jaime Barbiery, Ramon Soto and Victor Alcazar will show their creations Saturday, August 31, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Calle Emiliano Zapata 46 (one block up from Donas Donuts, turn left).
Zombie dance rehearsals
“Thrill the World” unites thousands of people around the globe to celebrate Michael Jackson’s talent by dancing simultaneously to “Thriller,” one of his most popular songs.
Elliott Joachim started the “Thriller” event in Ajijic in 2010 with just seven people. Nine years later, “Thrill the World” has become a major annual event in Ajijic.
Rehearsals for Thrill the World Ajijic 2019 begin on Saturday, August 31, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Cultural Center on the Ajijic Plaza. The rehearsals will continue on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., until the show on Saturday, October 26.

Talent Show auditions
The School for Special Children is looking for contestants to participate in talent shows to be held at the Spotlight Club during the next high season.
Auditions will be held Sunday, September 1, and Sunday, September 8, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Spotlight Club. Participants must supply a resume, recent photo and any music, props or other things needed for their performance. All ages and nationalities are welcome to apply.
Two shows per month, each featuring six contestants, will be held November through January. The six top contestants will vie for a 25,000-peso prize at the final talent show to be held at the Auditorio de la Ribera in February. Artist Society meets
The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) meets Monday, September 2, 10 a.m. at La Bodega Restaurant in Ajijic. Noris Binet will present “Archetypal Images from the Inner World of the Psyche that Foster Healing and Spiritual Growth” at 10:30 a.m.
Binet is a visual artist, author, lecturer and therapeutic counselor and spiritual teacher, originally from the Dominican Republic. She lived in Mexico in her 20s, where she studied art, architecture and sociology at the University of Guadalajara. Binet describes her work as being organic. Her media is acrylic, watercolor on canvas, and paper using airbrush. Her artwork reflects inner exploration and engagement with the mysterious power of symbols, and their transformative process. The vibrant colors and textures of her work have been inspired by the rich nature of the Caribbean Islands and Mexico.
The Ranch fundraiser
A fund-raiser concert/cocktail party will be held Monday, September 2, 5:30 to 8 p.m. for The Ranch, a no-kill dog shelter in Ajijic. This intimate event, located at a private home in upper La Floresta, will feature highly talented local musicians Victor and Ignacio Garcia. Elegant hors d’oeuvres will be served for 45 minutes just prior to the start of the concert, along with a cash bar. After the performance, guests will be offered a glass of Prosecco and chocolates from Chocolac Axixic to top off the evening.

Lake Chapala Society (LCS) members can take advantage of Film Aficionados screenings each Thursday, 2 p.m.
On September 5, “I Am Not Madame Bovary” (China, 2016) will be screened. (122 minutes.) An overwhelming sense of despair drives a woman to challenge the Chinese legal system after being swindled by her ex-husband.
Bravo Theatre
The Bravo Theatre is ready for the presentation of “Address Unknown” by Katherine Kressman Taylor – the company’s first show in its new location at Hidalgo 441 (just west of Have Hammers and S&S Auto).
Roger Larson and Ken Yakiwchuk star in this staged reading of a stunningly dramatic correspondence between two friends. Set in 1932, the play manages to give a relevant and uncannily current theme the twisty excitement of a thriller with a gasp-worthy ending.

Foto Septiembre
The 10th anniversary showing of Foto Septiembre Ajijic will be up at the Centro Cultural Ajijic, with an inauguration on Saturday, September 7, 5 to 8 p.m. This traditional event is organized by the Lagogris artists’ collective.
Photographs to be displayed include work by Farid Bak, Edgard Alcazar, Lauro Gutierrez, Antonio Riquelme, Maria Di Paola Blum, Jill Flyer, Hunter Johnson, Ricardo Hinojosa, Cathy Chalvignac, Jaime Barbiery, Jodi Burke, Henne Schoemaker, Rocio Lojero, Rebecca Ford, David Lorenz, Winston, Conrado III and Xill “Xulia” Fessenden.
Fotoseptiembre began in 1993 under the coordination of the National Council for Culture and the Arts (Conaculta) in Mexico City, and has had some 3,000 expositions in the last ten years throughout the country.
The photographs will be on display through September 17.
Celebration of life
Pianist Jorge Verdin brings together a host of lakeside musician friends for a concert at the Auditorio de la Ribera, Saturday, September 21, 7 p.m. Accompanying him are the CREM music school choir under the direction of Emmanuel Medeles, dancer Leonor Zertuche, saxophonist Chuko Eleazar, trumpeter Wayne Watson, violinist Juan Pablo Medeles, percussionist Archi Salcedo and bassist Jonathan Barocio.
