‘My Fair Lady’
Dave McIntosh directs Lakeside Little Theatre’s production of “My Fair Lady,” the award-winning story of a cockney flower girl transformed into an elegant lady.
Adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion” with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe, this show is the standard by which all other musicals are measured. Chopin
Concert pianist Samuel Armas presents a homage to Fryderyk Chopin Saturday, February 29, 7 p.m., at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala. The recital celebrates 210 years since the birth of one of the greatest exponents of romanticist music. Enjoy waltzes, preludes, scherzos, mazurkas, ballads, nocturnes, polonaises, etudes and transcriptions. Tickets, 150 pesos, are available at the center.
Film Aficionados
Lake Chapala Society (LCS) members can take advantage of Film Aficionados screenings.
The special showing of the five-part miniseries “Chernobyl” continues Wednesday, March 4, 2 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Society.
On Thursday, March 5, 2 p.m., see “The Farewell” (2019, USA). A Chinese family discovers that their grandmother has only a short while left to live. They decide to keep her in the dark, scheduling a wedding as an excuse to gather before she dies. (94 minutes.)
Flamenco Jazz
Flamenco Jazz, a show by Ray Velvet, debuts at the Auditorio de la Ribera, Wednesday, March 4, 5 p.m. Flamenco dancer Angel Rodriguez takes the stage with singer Julio de la Isla and musicians Gilberto Rios, Carlos Iván de León, Emilia Gálvez, Willy Zavala, Eleazar Soto and Alvaro Rubio for this fusion of flamenco and jazz. Exhibit
Twelve of Lakesides master artists will show their work in an homage to the Ribera de Chapala precursors of art Wednesday, March 4, 7 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala.
Mac is back
Mac Morison returns to Club Exotica Friday, March 6, as host and headliner of his seventh benefit concert entitled “Let Me Try Again.”
Morison sings tunes from Sinatra, Torme, Damone, Bennett and many others, accompanied by the Ajijic Showgirls, who will perform a stunning Vegas-style dance routine.
Other performers include Mariana Vigueras singing soul, pop, rock, jazz, Broadway and opera; Comedy Central comedian Jeff Capri; and Mike “Scatman” Fortier and his band, The Jazz Prophets, playing blues, jazz, rock and ballads.
This year’s show will benefit Turning Point, a non-profit project providing free education to local children in the art of dance, as well as inspiring adults to gain confidence and healthy bodies through studying dance.

The Lakeside Little Theatre presents a National Theatre Live HD recording of “All About Eve” Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8, 4 p.m.
The play is adapted by Ivo van Hove from the 20th Century Fox film by Joseph L. Mankiewicz (1950) and the play “The Wisdom of Eve” by Mary Orr. Los Cantantes del Lago
Lakeside’s premier choral group, Los Cantantes del Lago, has prepared a stunning concert for the spring: “Hispanic Roots,” featuring work by Latin composers all sung in Spanish.
The concert’s standout piece will be the “Misa Criolla,” the first mass not sung in Latin, written by Ariel Ramírez of Argentina. Ramírez was inspired to write this “spiritual piece” after meeting Elisabeth and Regina Brückner, German sisters who regularly risked their lives bringing food to Nazi prisoners during World War II. Ramírez believes the work should not be seen as a strictly Catholic message, but as the expression of a universal feeling, linked to the desire for peace that exists in all cultures.
The Misa is a 16-minute Mass with choir, soloist(s) and traditional folk instruments based on the rhythms of genres such as chaser, carnavalitol and still pampeano.

Mega art auction
Look for great deals on a selection of oils, watercolors, acrylics, drawings, photographs, sculptures and other works at the first annual maga art auction organized to benefit the Ajijic branch of the Cetac technological high school.
The works by 19 lakeside artists will go on the block Thursday, March 12, 4 p.m. at the school’s campus, located on the Ajijic highway next door to the Auditorio de la Ribera. Viewing of the pieces will begin at 10 a.m. Auction proceeds will support ongoing improvements at the facility.
BRAVO! Theatre
“The Book of Will” opens Thursday, March 12 at the BRAVO! Theatre. This is the story of William Shakespeare’s friends, who after his death gathered the pieces of his plays together and put them into folios which were formally printed into his plays. Without his friends, we would never have even known who Shakespeare was, much less have been exposed to the beauty of his plays and sonnets.

LCS Blues Fest
“Day of the Blues,” the Lake Chapala Society’s second annual Blues Fest, runs Saturday, March 21, 2:30-6:30 p.m. at the LCS grounds.
The event features Blue Jay Slim and The Blues Machine, and Tommy Banks and The Soul Investors. Food is courtesy of the Smoke House and La Paceña. Book ice-cream will be on sale.

Community Orchestra
The Lake Chapala Community Orchestra will perform another exciting concert Sunday, March 29, and Monday, March 30, 3 p.m.at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church.
Entitled “Pages From History,” the concert will feature orchestral works written to commemorate famous historical events.
“Before film music gave us a musical background to history, composers such as Beethoven and Tchaikovsky composed orchestra works depicting significant historical events” says Michael Reason, the orchestra’s conductor. “1812” by Tchaikovsky is perhaps the most famous of these but “Finlandia” by Sibelius and Egmont Overture by Beethoven are equally appropriate in their respective appraisal of history.
Reason believes that an orchestral concert should appeal to a wide audience and his ability to program concerts with works from diverse musical genres is a hallmark of the orchestra’s presentations.
Guest artists include local vocalist Judy Roberts singing a World War II song medley and the orchestra’s principal clarinetist, Susanne Bullock, in Mozart’s “Clarinet Concerto.”
Music from the cinema will feature prominently, with James Horner’s magnificent score to “Apollo 13” and John Williams moving theme to Oliver Stone’s “JFK,” and all music being complimented with video projections.
