Casa Colon Concept House and Galí will host an opening of art exhibitions, tastings and workshops promoting agave, Saturday, April 30, 5 to 9 p.m. and Sunday, May 1, noon to 6 p.m. Calle Colon 29, Ajijic. The artists will be at the event.

Opera in Ajijic

pg17aThe Met presents “Turandot,” by Giacomo Puccini, Saturday, May 7, 11:55 a.m. at Movie Space Cinema in Ajijic, in conjunction with the Chapala Opera Guild. English subtitles. Thrilling sopranos Christine Goerke and Liudmyla Monastyrska share the title role of the legendary cold-hearted princess. Tenors Yusif Eyvazov and Yonghoon Lee trade off as the bold prince determined to win Turandot’s love, alongside sopranos Gabriella Reyes, Michelle Bradley, and Ermonela Jaho as the devoted servant Liù and bass-baritone James Morris and basses Alexander Tsymbalyuk and Ferruccio Furlanetto as the blind king Timur. Marco Armiliato conducts Puccini’s stirring score. The China of this opera, set in “legendary times,” is a mythic realm viewed from the exoticizing perspective of 20th-century Europeans.

With a kid’s soul

Isidro Xilotl Xilonzochitl presents an art exhibition “Chivo” of work by children from Lakeside, Saturday, April 30, “Dia de los Niños” 6 p.m. cocktail opening at Galeria Sol y Luna, Rio Bravo 10 A, Ajijic.

• ASA Membership Meeting is Monday, May 2,  10 a.m. at La Bodega. Presentations will be given by several members. We welcome all artists from Lakeside to join us for networking.

• ASA Third Thursdays will have its inaugural artist happy hour May 19, 4 to 6 p.m., at La Bodega. No special programming, just an opportunity to get better acquainted. 

Hot Spring Festival

Joco Loco May Cultural Festival is on May 14 and 15, noon to midnight, at Casa Joco, Calle el Chante 5, in Jocotepec. The event features 22 live musical acts and other performers, artist exhibits, vendors, food and drink.

Although subject to change, Saturday, onstage will be Trejo and Manns Duo, Los Groobeaners, Paul Lopez and His Seeing Eye Dog, Tito Gonzalez, Black Sapphire Jazz, dance group Expectancy, Victor Figueroa, Lola la Tequilera, 2Meskins, Sen Z.O, and Vandalos 432. Sunday will feature live painting by Isidro (Chivo) Xilotl (which will be auctioned), Blue Velvet Trio, Gypsy Jazz Trio, Becken, Mary Island, La Sensación with Kenji Matsui, Rojo Venado, Veyer, The Black Dogs, Sawanya (Diva) Stanley. Bring cooler, and swimsuits if you wish. Free parking, pool open. No pets or grills. Big Band swing

In collaboration once more with 4to Sentido Restaurant, Los Amigos Big Band will present their new program “Swingin’ into Spring!” Thursday, May 19, and Friday, May 20.

These performances will feature many swing favorites that will definitely get those feet tapping: “In the Mood,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Sing, Sing, Sing”  and “Moonlight Serenade” are just some of the songs in the lineup of great music they have in store.

Under the dynamic direction of Michael Reason, the band’s regular vocalist, Doug Voet, will be joined by local favorite Lorenzo “Elmo” Adams.

Both shows start at 5 p.m. and a special “Swingin’” menu will be available.

Tickets, 350 pesos (not including food and beverage), with only 120 seats available for each concert.

Photography enthusiasts

Lakeside Shutterbugs, a group for all photography enthusiasts, has scheduled its May excursion for Friday, May 20. Explore the dry, dusty saltbeds of Laguna de Sayula for a morning shoot.
