Musical at LLT

Lakeside Little Theatre’s next production is the musical “Side by Side,” opening February 17 and running through February 28.

Directed by Ann Swiston, this revue-style extravaganza from the musicals of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Stephen Sondheim and Rogers and Hammerstein encompasses a wide variety of genres, including ballads, rock ‘n roll, solos, duets, chorus and ensemble numbers. The production will feature more than 30 songs interpreted by 14 women and 13 men (including three married couples), and live piano accompaniment. Six Lakeside artists will produce 17 different stage backdrops, including some with three-dimensional effects. A variety of projections will also be featured.

Dave McIntosh is the assistant director; music direction is by Gary Wayne Young and choreography by Alexis Hoff.

Northern Lights update

pg17cNorthern Lights will host flamenco dancer Maria Martha Rodriguez in a performance of “Amor Brujo,” Thursday, February 23, 7:30 p.m. at the Auditorio de la Ribera.  “Love Witch” is a flamenco ballet with music by Manuel de Falla.

Rodriguez will bring to life the exciting story of a gypsy bewitching a man with ritual enchantments, magic, recitations and dances so that at dawn he awakens in love with her.

The musical arrangement of this dance/music/opera/theater piece features flamenco, guitar, an octet and a mezzo soprano. Originally “Amor Brujo” had spoken dialogue but De Falla changed that into three outstanding songs for a mezzo soprano, which will be performed by Amalia Avilan.

Also featured in this concert is Raffi Altuniam, a well-known guitarist from Toronto who has worked with many musicians worldwide and played everything from classical to Celtic music. Many of the Manhattan Chamber Players will be members of the octet.

Other concerts that are quickly selling out include The Gryphon Trio, Bridges on February 13, All Jazzed Up on February 16 and the Gala Orchestra concert on February 18.

Most of the Salon Series concerts at Hause Der Musik, Constitucion 112 in Ajijic, are sold out but there are still tickets to the 7:30 p.m. concerts: Enchanted Tales on, February 17; Baroque and Beyond on February 22 and The Manhattan Chamber Players on February 24. These concerts have limited seating to a maximum of 100. Reservations: This email address is being protected from spambots.
