LLT season 58 closer
The Lakeside Little Theatre’s next production is “33 Variations,” by Moises Kaufman, and directed by Suki O’Brien. Show dates are Friday, March 24 to Sunday, April 2; weekday evening shows at 7:30 p.m. and weekend matinees at 4 p.m. (no show on Monday, March 27).
In parallel tales of obsession, musicologist Katherine Brandt attempts to uncover the motivation behind Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations, a series of 33 variations on an ordinary waltz by a composer he felt was beneath him.
The cast comprises Diana Rowland, M.A. Bruneau, Ricardo Del Toro, Rob Stupple, Ken Yakiwchuk, Randy Warren, and Donna Burroughs. The ensemble is comprise of Chris L’Ecluse, Jutta McAdam and Deborah Elder. Rodrigo Leal Murillo is the pianist.
Tickets are 350 pesos at the LLT website, or the LLT box office one hour before curtain on all performance days, or Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to noon the week before the show opens, and the week of performance.
Cuban sound
Direct From Cuba is a collection of performers who take the stage at the Ajijic Spot, Friday, March 24, 7 p.m. The event combines the sounds of Cuban band leader Gabriel Hernandez with his quintet (also featuring trumpet sensation Alejandro Delgado); Bolivian-born saxophone legend Alfred Thompson, giving a tribute to the Buena Vista Social Club; Yaima Gutierrez with her group Primera Clase, which will get you up and dancing with their fervent Latin beat; and Luis Gasca performing a tribute to Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Chuck Mangione.
Tickets, 500 pesos, are available at the door of The Ajijic Spot, located inside the El Jardin Restaurant on the Ajijic Plaza. Doors open 6:30 p.m.; concert at 7 p.m. Information: 376-766-4672.
Bare Stage Theatre
“Steel Magnolias,” by Robert Harling, is one of the most popular and most performed plays since its premiere in 1987.
The play is set over three years of Saturday mornings at Truvy’s beauty salon where a group of friends meet to exchange recipes and gossip while having their hair done. We first meet them on Shelby’s wedding day and almost every significant gathering day or event that follows. We’ve all laughed and shed tears following their journey but as the title suggests, the female characters are as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel. And boy, ain’t that the truth!
The production, directed by Rosann Balbontin, features Pamela Johnson, Val Jones, Pam Landon, Anne Swanson, Maxanne Swanson and Roseann Wilshere.

Auditorio Chamber Music
Chamber music performances continue Saturday, March 25, 7 p.m. at the auditorium of the Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera.
Threebone, a trio of trombonists, presents a program of Erik Ewazen’s Eaglehawk, Schumann’s Fuge 68, Haydn’s Trio, and Dos Sonatas by Daniel Spear.
April 1, the Arche String Quartet offers the String Quartet No.2 in G Major by Alfonso de Elias and the String Quartet opus 110 No. 8 by Dmitri Shostakovich.

Open dress rehearsal
The Lake Chapala Orchestra is opening up their dress rehearsal on Saturday March 25, 1 p.m. to anyone that wants to attend. Experience the rehearsal process and the powerful sound of a 50-piece orchestra.
The orchestra’s three concerts on March 31 and April 1 are completely sold out but their open rehearsal allows everyone to see and hear this dynamic ensemble that has become major feature of Lakeside’s cultural life.
Free admission and no need to reserve. Just turn up at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, 250 San Jorge, Riberas del Pilar. Doors open at 12.45 p.m.
Collective exhibit
Galeria Monica Cardenas will host a collective exhibit of painting, photography, collage and poetry by Kenia Cano, Monica Cardnas, Jorge Esquinca and Mario Heredia, Saturday, April 1. Poetry readings begin 6 p.m. and the inauguration of the exhibit is 7 to 9 p.m.

Concerts in the Park
Lauren Jade will perform a tribute to Gladys Knight Monday, April 3, 5 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Society.
