Written in 1893 while Dvorak was director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York, the symphony was influenced by African American spirituals and Southern Plantation songs. Elements of these are used throughout the work, especially in the famous theme of the second movement, which later became the well-known song “Going Home.” Melodies from the symphony have been featured in countless movies and commercials.
The concert opens with Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme for cello and orchestra, a technically demanding work recorded by renowned cellists. Yalissa Cruz, one of Mexico’s most outstanding cellists, will be the soloist for this performance. “Yalissa inspires everyone who performs with her,” says Michael Reason, the orchestra’s conductor.
