Iconic artists
The Centro Cultural Ajijic is holding a cocktail opening for the art exhibit “Icons of Axixic” Saturday, August 5, 5 p.m. This collective show is part of the 18th anniversary celebration of the cultural center.
Showing will be Antonio Cardenas, Efren Gonzalez, Antonio Lopez Vega, Jesus Lopez Vega, Alejandro Martinez, Dionicio Morales, Alberto Muñoz, Juan Navarro, Juan Olivares, Lucia Padilla, Daniel Palma, Javier Ramos, Isidro Xilotl, and Javier Zaragoza.
Stage
The AjiMaiz theater company presents a multimedia presentation, “El Vuelo de la Grullas (The Flight of the Cranes),” Sunday, August 6, 1 p.m. at the Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera (Auditorio de la Ribera). The play is based on a real story of a Japanese boy during WWII who suffered from the conflict and lost his laughter, and what his townsmen did to restore it. Free admission.
Folkloric Dance
The Ballet Folklorico Municipal Tomatlan gives a free performance Sunday, August 6, 6 p.m. in the forecourt of the Ajijic Cultural Center.
Piano
Miguel Garjeda presents a free piano recital, Sunday, August 6, 12:30 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala.
Jazz at LCS
Casa Domenech (inside the Lake Chapala Society) hosts a summer jazz madness event with the Willy Zavala Quintet, Monday, August 7—changed from 2 to 5 p.m.
Pianist Zavala will be joined by Jose Chacon from Venezuela on guitar, Diego Franco on sax, Armando Curiel on drums and Freddy Adiran on bass. Tickets, 400 pesos, are available at paypal.me/rayvelvetpro or at the restaurant.
Come sing
Deborah Inkster-Bain and Christine Wysock are renewing the Lakeside Singers choral group. If you want to have fun, love to sing, play an instrument, then this group is for you. No pressure for performing, just have fun. The Singers meet every other Thursday, 1 to 3 p.m., at Christ Church Lakeside, between the Smokehouse restaurant and the antique store on the Carretera. Come bring your voice and/or instrument to the next get together on August 10, at 1 p.m. Lyric books are available for purchase if you find this group is right for you.
Artist Salon
The 360 Xochi Quetzal Artists and Writers Residency program holds a monthly Artists Together salon celebrating visiting artists and writers, Friday, August 11, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Garden of Dreams Boutique Hotel, Constitucion 105, Ajijic. This month, silk and felt artist Meridee Smith and batik artist Keith Smith, both of Auburn, California, and digital and acrylic artist Sharon Smith of Portland, Oregon, will be featured.
Art and Music
The Lake Chapala Fine Artists Guild and the Festival del Lago are joining forces to bring you an “Evening of Art and Music” Saturday, August 12 at the Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera (Auditorio de la Ribera).
From 2 to 8 p.m., you can enjoy an exhibition of fine art in a variety of mediums from some of the best-known Lakeside artists, plus three talented young artists from the LCS Children’s Art Program (the Guild supports this important program). The Guild’s art exhibitions feature only established, professional artists. Membership is purposely kept small, is by invitation only, and new artists who want to join are vetted for the quality of their work. A special “Meet the Artists Event” will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. featuring guest artist Enrique Velazquez and live music. A raffle for some art will be held during this event. Admission to the art exhibition is free.
At 8 p.m., the Festival del Lago presents a “Rising Stars Concert,” when the talented students of Festival del Lago take center stage. Witness their exceptional skills and passion as they showcase their musical prowess. Tickets for the concert are available at festivaldellago.com.
A preview exhibition of art only will be held on Friday, August 11, 2 to 6 p.m. Admission is free.
Jazz night
The Agua Dulce Ensemble performs at La Cochera Cultural Sunday, August 13, 6:30 p.m. The lineup is Chen Quintero on guitar, Juan Manuel Ayala on bass, Guillermo Nuñez on drums, Cuervo Gonzalez on piano and Eleazar Soto on sax. BRAVO Theatre
A baker’s dozen of local performance artists will come together for Bravura, a gathering of spectacular material and talent at BRAVO Theatre, August 19, 20, 22 and 23. Expect a little song, a little dance and lots of comedy. Participating are Timothy G. Ruff Welch, Ken Yakiwchuk, Wanda White, Amy Stackhouse, Roxanne Roseblatt, Kathleen Morris, Jayme Littlejohn, Roger Larson, Roy Haynes, Maritza Freyslinger, Mark Donaldson, Tanya Beede and Sally Jo Bartlett. Art Market
The Artists Alliance of Lake Chapala (formerly Ajijic Society of the Arts) will hold its monthly Art Market Saturday, August 19, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Garden of Dreams Boutique Hotel, Constitucion 105, Ajijic. Meet some 50 local artists, get bargains on arts and crafts, listen to live music by Juan Castañon, the Groobeaners and the Sofia Ramirez and Gil Rios Jazz Duet, and enjoy food and drinks in the hotel’s beautiful garden setting. This month the featured medium is photography.
