It takes a village

It’s a true marvel the way Ajijic villagers manage to put together their clever minds, big hearts and creative hands to organize community happenings.

If local townspeople are capable of teaming up for social, religious and cultural activities, why the devil can’t they collaborate in keeping the village neat and orderly?

A prime example is the annual Passion Play that recently involved scores of people in the acting, set building, costume making, technical tasks and crowd control. This year’s production was a moving portrayal of the scriptural account of Jesus Christ’s life lessons, and practically seamless as the various episodes unfolded at customary locations and the new venue at the local charro bullring.

Many other folks contributed time, decorative skills and cooking talents to the Palm Sunday Verbena del Pasado held at the plaza to help finance the Pasión de Cristo program.

Another show of village solidarity will take place Sunday, April 30 at the Feria de Salud set at the waterfront Malecón where a number of local families will run a food fair and athletic activities to raise money to support treatment for relatives and neighbors suffering critical health problems.

On May 3, Day of the Holy Cross, residents of the Guadalupe and San Sebastian barrios will set up colorful altars loaded with fresh fruits, freshly baked loaves of traditional tachihual bread and assorted pantry goods. The contents will be given away to anyone making a pledge to return the favor at next year’s celebration of the holiday.
