A reality check for newbie expats

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by how challenging it can be for newbie expats to catch on to the realities of adjusting to life in Mexico and our lakeside community in particular. Sometimes the questions I run across on social networks cause some head shaking or slaps on the forehead with the palm of my hand.

pg12aTwo weeks ago, that was my reaction to the clueless lady who went on Facebook to ask what local restaurants would be open on Easter Sunday. Bless her heart, she was obviously unaware that the Easter vacation period is T.H.E. peak tourist season in the Lake Chapala region. Scores of the area’s hospitality enterprises depend on that two-week lapse to survive less lucrative times.

The Chapala government estimates that more than 100,000 visitors swarmed the municipality between March 29 and April 5. That adds up to 100,000 hungry mouths to feed one way or another, probably multiple times over one or more days. So, in other words, there is not a single restaurant that normally opens on a Sunday that would think of closing its doors on Easter Sunday.
