It’s that time of year... to tighten your belt

It’s that time of year when the world falls in love, over-indulges and then has to resolve in the New Year to go on diets. And, of course, jolly St. Nick represents our children’s role model for giving – and, based on his pants size, consuming.

Several years ago, this newspaper reported on the new strategies governments, schools and parents needed to apply to reduce obesity rates in Mexico and in the United  States.  They covered many subjects and many alternative lifestyle changes. But mostly, these strategies were aimed at teaching children proper eating habits and eschewing chatarra (junk food) and sugar concentrates known as soft drinks, which seem to get into bigger bottles every year, while the snack packaging remains as seductive as puppy love. The dietary mantra was always, “Eat Right,” when nobody really knew what that meant.
