Lakeside, a medical Mecca

Fifteen years ago, there might have been three or maybe four medical practitioners living and working at Lakeside, some moonlighting at Pemex.

If you had anything like a serious illness, you had to go to Guadalajara for specialty care, treatment and proper fitting shoes.  Or, you had to call a bruja. If you’re walking along the Malecon and you collapse, or if you fall and break your wrist, or if you suddenly feel an overwhelming nausea, just stop the next Mexican you see and there’s a good chance he or she is a doctor. Some may even be of voting age.

Lakeside has the highest concentration of retired North Americans anywhere in the world. The average age of gringos here at Lakeside is somewhere in the 60s or 70s, according to the long lines at Walmart’s Disabled Express line.

As a result, what seems to have happened is that Lakeside has now attracted a higher percentage of physicians, dentists and medical specialists of every kind, due to the influx of geriatric immigrants and their diverse medical record of just about every possible health complaint, including many (from hypochondriacs) that are diseases only cats get. Today, there are now almost as many doctors available here as there are abarrotes.
