When it comes to great hiking trails, residents of the towns along Lake Chapala’s north shore have only to stroll out their doors and head up into the hills.
But if you’ve been doing that for the last ten years, by now you may be looking for a new trail.
I suggest you check out Sendero Interpretativo La Angostura, located (as the crow flies) just seven kilometers north of the lake, near the small town of La Cañada.
I was first introduced to this camino by Franky Álvarez, who wanted to show me a big shelter cave above the little Tecuan River. The cave turned out to be quite uninteresting, but the path along the riverside was beautiful and included archaeological remains that were as intriguing as they were mysterious. The only problem was driving the very rough, rocky road (two kilometers) between La Cañada and the trail head.
