City Living - April 11, 2014

Some of the best BMX bikers in the world will show off their skills at another edition of the Red Bull Dirt Conquers series at the Parque Metropolitano on Sunday, April 13.

Once again the course will be designed by master BMX track builder Dave King of X Games fame.  It will reflect all the disciplines of BMX freestlye (dirt, park and street) and feature ramps, handrails, a steel capusule and two central mounds.  The course is built in a bowl that was once the park’s lake.

The park’s entrance is located  at Beethoven and Independencia in Colonia Estancia.

Free food

The Philadelphia Food Truck – courtesy of the company that makes the famous cream cheese not the U.S. state – will stop off in the huge Plaza de las Americas in Zapopan Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13 to hand out free samples of food.

The truck will offer five options: chicken tacos, potato croquettes, meatballs, chicken rolls and chiles rellenos (stuffed chilies). The public will be offered the items both with and without cream cheese, so they can make their own minds up which tastes better.

According to food and beverage conglomerate Mondelez International, the manufacturers of Philadelphia cream cheese, the Food Truck will distribute 11,200 free plates of food during its tour of Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.

Traditional altar

The Museo de la Ciudad opens an artistic altar dedicated to La Dolorosa (the Sorrowful Mother) in a Viernes de Dolores tradition on Friday, April 11, 7 p.m.  See it through Monday, April 14.  Calle Independencia 684, Centro.

Seven churches

On Maundy Thursday, April 17, thousands of Tapatios will go to church seven times for the “Visit to the Seven Churches,” a Roman Catholic tradition dating back to medieval Spain. In Guadalajara, pilgrims tend to visit seven of the oldest churches in the city center: the metropolitan Cathedral and the churches of San Agustin, Santa Teresa, Nuestra Señora de la Merced, Santa Maria de Gracia, San Francisco and Santa Aranzazu.

The seven-church visit commemorates Christ’s departure from the Last Supper and his walk through the Garden of Gethsemane, where he was ultimately betrayed by Judas Iscariot. After taking communion at their starting church, worshippers amble through the streets to their next chosen destination.

Because fasting is customary on Good Friday (the following day), vendors of traditional Easter empanadas (pastries filled with a variety of stuffings) do a brisk trade. In fact, the empanadas are so famous that many people take part in the seven-church visit just to sample the different varieties.
