Green Race

The third annual “Green Race” and Ecological Fair takes place Sunday, April 19 at the American School in Guadalajara. The U.S. Consulate General in Guadalajara is organizing the event to correspond with International Earth Day.

The 10-kilometer race starts at 7.30 a.m., with an entrance fee of 280 pesos and the three-kilometer race sets off at  9 a.m., with a 150-peso fee.

Last year’s event raised over 125,000 pesos from runners and corporate sponsors.

On the day, the school will host an ecological fair where NGOs, businesses and government representatives will offer information on environmental projects. Food and drinks will be served. Everyone is welcome.

World Book Day

In a bid to encourage reading in Jalisco, World Book Day will be celebrated with a diverse range of activities.

On Sunday, April 19, the Jalisco Culture Secretariat is organizing a reading marathon, a reading cabin and a series of workshops. The celebration kicks off at 10 a.m. with a marathon in homage to Mexican novelist Fernando del Paso. The event takes place in the Jardin del Carmen (opposite the Ex-Convento del Carmen).

At the same time, inside the Ex-Convento, a “Reading Route” will feature reading and writing workshops from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A Reading Cabin will be set up at the same time on the corner of Juarez and Federalismo. A performer will bring to life fragments from the work of Mexican short story writer Edmundo Valades.

On Thursday, April 23 (World Book Day itself), there will be a public reading (in Spanish) of Lewis Carroll’s classic “Alice in Wonderland.” The reading begins at 10 a.m. and finishes at 8 p.m. The event will feature a diverse range of readers and take place in the Rambla Cataluña (Calle Escorza and Juarez) next to the Universidad de Guadalajara rectory. Entry to all events is free.

Guadalajara Zoo

The Guadalajara Zoo keeps on innovating. Its latest installation is a cylindrical wire tube in the monkey section that allows the primates to move from area to area above the visitors.

Film footage sought

The producers of a documentary on the dramatic waterfall of El Salto de Juanacatlan are looking for assistance from amateur movie-makers. The production team wants home videos shot in 8 mm, 16 mm or videotape that feature the Santiago River waterfall in its prime. The documentary traces the environmental causes for the decline of the waterfall, which was once known as the “Niagara of Mexico.”

In return for material, the filmmakers will provide a digital copy of the film and include the corresponding credits in the thank you section at the end of film. They may be prepared to pay a fee depending on the quality and content of the material.
